Africa’s wildlife and spectacular landscapes captivated me as a child. I found the elephants especially endearing. My parents were adventurous and we kept all sorts of pets. Sara, a serval cat, lived with us for several years. Our friends cared for an orphaned elephant calf and a cheetah cub after their mothers were taken by poachers.
We also lived in the UK and Turkey, before emigrating to New Zealand, where I graduated from Vet School.
Africa remains in the back of my thoughts and her wildlife close to my heart. Sadly, my trip to work with elephants in South Africa in 2020 was postponed due to covid19.
Writing and nature are my passions. I’ve hiked and dived in many of the the wildernesses still left on the planet. It gave me a sense of how much we depend on the natural world. I think our outlook improves when we acknowledge this planet is for all beings, not just human beings.
We all need to play our part, not matter how small, before it’s too late and our wildernesses are gone forever. We can’t wait for others to sort out the problems. There are so many ways to contribute. I donate to the World Land Trust. Our salvation relies on saving our diverse living world. Each drop helps create a tide of change.
